It’s apparent that I don’t actually blog anymore (at least nothing of substance), but I still can’t help but sit down at the end of a year and look back at it. It’s become a sort of tradition for me since probably 2006, I think. At any rate, I’ll get to it.

This year has been a year of some firsts, some first-in-a-long-times, and several ups and downs. In some ways, it was a year typical of the few since college, but in some ways it was a new beginning. The overwhelming story in which I found myself this year was, of course, dating a wonderful girl who moved across the Atlantic Ocean. I could try to play it cool and act like that was a small detail or just a facet of my life, but it truthfully sent ripples into every part of my life, since things aren’t as compartmentalized as we like to believe. So with that undercurrent steadily flowing around me, I embarked on some adventures and learned a bit about myself, even as I often wondered what comes next. This is what happened:

Another atypically-snowy January with epic driving conditions, and thankfully no accidents.

Saying goodbye to my girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. I would not be with her again for six months.

Excellent trip to visit my friends Joe and Kyle out in New Mexico in March. I’d never been to that part of the country, and it was very open and freeing just when I needed it.

Participating in 40 Days of Water for Lent, which included no coffee. It was rough.

I turned 25. That’s a quarter of a century.

Fun trip to visit my friend Brad in South Carolina for Memorial Day, including taking part in an open mic night. It had been too long since I embraced my love for music.

Giving my life to Jesus in baptism on June 5th, 2011. I woke up one day realizing that, despite my religious activities, I ultimately did what I wanted and either justified it or “repented” later. Jesus was not my Lord. But the Spirit got a hold of me that Sunday morning and wouldn’t let me go. Yes, I had been baptized before, but I truly felt I needed to make that decision as a man, fully aware of my own brokenness and the darkness of the world. I’d love to talk about it if you ever want to know more.

Working on my first real web development side work by de-Flashifying StoneOakBuilders.com, and building my first side project site from scratch later in the year.

Oh, and I worked out a lot. I didn’t do the half marathon, but I got back into lifting.

In early July, I took part in my first international mission trip by going to Honduras. It was a very humbling experience, and it planted the seeds for me wanting to learn Spanish in order to better connect with the people there, and even those in the U.S. for whom it is the primary language. Again, I’d love to talk about it if anyone wants to hear more.

Finally in August I got to go visit my lovely lady in Spain. It was an amazing eight days (dare I say the best of the year), and my first trip across the pond since 2004. It certainly gave me a better appreciation for what her day-to-day life is like there!

In September, I moved from the condo in Antioch back into the city with a friend of a friend. While I am very thankful for my time out at my parents’ house, the new 800-square-foot palace near I-65 and Wedgewood is ideally positioned for work and play, being just minutes from both.

And it seems like there haven’t been a ton of memorable events since October, save my incredible sickness the first weekend of December (a virus and pneumonia). It’s been years since I’ve been that down-and-out for that long.

As always, there were some great musical releases and discoveries:

“We Can Create Our Own World” by Deadhorse, who I had the fortune of befriending late in the year.

“We Do What We Want” by Emery.

“Leveler” by August Burns Red – probably my album of the year.

“Broken Voice EP” by My Epic. If you’re into thoughtful acoustic music, you will like this.

“Major/Minor” by Thrice.

And compared to last year, I read some books that really made me think:

Desiring God by John Piper.

A Praying Life by Paul Miller. This one seriously renewed my view of prayer.

The Secret Message of Jesus by Brian McLaren.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller. I just got this one for Christmas, already read it, and have lots to process.

The Introvert Advantage by Marti Olsen Laney gets honorable mention.

There were others, but those were the most thought-provoking for me.

And aside from that, I’m sort of “plowing the same field” that I have been for a few years as far as my profession and the church body go.

I was writing an email the other day, reflecting on my adult life, and I couldn’t help but notice that every third year seems to be incredibly formative, and even transformative. By that I mean that both 2006 and 2009 were amazing years for me in so many ways. It’s not that the years prior, in between, or after were bad, but those two years stand out as being full of vibrant memories, achievement, and growth. I felt more alive. Perhaps some of that had to do with things for which I once had a greater passion, namely music and writing. (I still often wonder whether those things are a part of my true vocation for life or only a phase.) I say all that to say, while I am not superstitious, I have a good feeling about 2012. I hope and pray that it is a year of unparalleled peace for myself, my friends and family, and the Kingdom of God. Let’s see what it holds.

If I keep running into a technical problem and it is annoying enough for me to throw together a solution, then I’m certain there are others who would appreciate a workaround as well. In this case, any pictures someone sends to my Gmail from an iOS device are rotated 90 degrees to the left. The in-message preview looks fine, but if I open up the detail view, they are inevitably sideways. Odd that it only seems to be a problem for Apple devices…

So I put together this userscript which rotates the image 90 degrees clockwise each time it is clicked. It’s a quick and dirty solution, for sure, but it beats craning my neck just to view attached images. Should work for Chrome natively and Firefox with GreaseMonkey, but let me know if you try and have any issues.

You can download/install it here.

Edit 01/26/12: Google recently changed the subdomain used to view image attachments. Script updated to work on new subdomain.

As I’ll be doing more traveling (flying in particular) this year than the past few years combined, I have learned both the joys and anguish of searching for flights online. On the one hand, more information is available than ever, on the other… more information is available than ever. Particularly hard was the trip I am planning to Spain and the overwhelming permutations of travel arrangements available. So I would like to share what I’ve learned to hopefully help some others dig through the mountains of data and popups (yes – who knew they still existed?) to find the flight you’re looking for as painlessly as possible. Below is the process I devised, which assumes you know roughly the dates you will be traveling.

By far the coolest site I discovered was Hipmunk.com. I’m not usually a huge fan of sites with weird names and large, cartoonish graphics, but this site nailed it. Forgive the few UI quirks on the homepage and enter your information. The results screen that greets you is a beautiful untangling of departures and arrivals with rich sorting options (including “sort by: agony”). So much better than having to think to yourself, “Ok this one leaves at this time… but gets in at this time. And this other one leaves at this time…” Instead, it is laid out plainly where the shorter the line, the shorter the travel time.

Once on this screen, you can easily determine which flights best fit into your schedule, which are the shortest, and which offer the best mix of all factors. This one thing alleviated the biggest frustration I found on most travel sites, and that is most of them don’t want to tell you what day your flight arrives if it spans days. Maybe it’s an oversight, but I can’t tell you how many times I had the perfect flight picked out only to realize it arrives at 7:35 PM on Sunday instead of Saturday. It’s probably not a problem unless you’re flying internationally, but that’s when everything takes much more forethought, isn’t it?

Once you have decided on a flight, it’s time to shop around. The prices on Hipmunk seemed comparable, but that’s the beauty of the multitude of travel sites. Competition = lower prices. So I will say that I found these sites to have the broadest choices.

Kayak

Travelocity

CheapOAir

Trip Advisor

They’re nothing earth-shattering, but there is certainly power in breadth of search. I noticed that different sites had different deals, and even those that claimed to aggregate didn’t always catch everything. So once you find the flight you want, look all over the place to find the lowest price. I will also note that some sites have checkboxes that allow you to “search other sites at the same time.” I don’t recommend checking those boxes unless you like being taken back to 1998 and the land of pop-ups, as that’s how they work across the board.

So find yours for the lowest price, buy, then fly!

At any rate, I hope this can save someone else some time. Let me know if you find better and less painful ways to see what flights are available and then find the cheapest one

Getting a feed of the Amazon App Store Android app of the day was just as easy as the MP3 Daily Deal, thanks to their Twitter feed. I would be remiss not to thank idfromuser.com for the dead simple means of finding the Twitter user id to plug into the URL. Much easier than digging through the HTML trying to find it. At any rate, here’s an RSS feed for the app of the day for any others who prefer to aggregate all their news in one place away from Twitter.

There’s some cool stuff on Twitter, but I’m still not on there (sorry), and I don’t plan on joining. (I feel like I don’t have the time to commit, and I don’t want to have another vacant account out there to maintain.) Instead, I follow several streams via RSS and get a daily digest in my Google Reader account. It’s working out well for me, as I get the info I want and need without getting sucked into the Twitter ecosystem.

That said, when I found out about the AmazonMP3 Daily Deal, I figured there had to be a way to be notified without checking the Amazon site every day, even though that’s essentially what they want. (Sorry, Amazon.) Turns out they have a Twitter stream that publishes the deals, which is great. Alas, they didn’t publish the link to the RSS feed for whatever reason. Though some minimal work, I found it and would like to share it with anyone else who may want an RSS feed of the info to consume. So here it is:

http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/14740219.rss

Hopefully someone finds it useful. I’m looking into a similar thing for their Android Free App of the Day, and I’ll put that up if it’s available.
